Dan Blah Meredith

Dan is a talented technologist who utilizes his natural problem solving ability, unique skill set, and a decade of experience to apply technology to address social justice and community needs as a technivist. In addition to his array of technical skills, Dan is both a strong communicator and talented educator. His rare combination of interpersonal skills and technical expertise allows him to bring together groups and technologies in order to provide an environment which fosters efficiency, productivity, and ingenuity.

He is an East Central Illinois native who grew up in Gibson City and after spending two years studying Psychology and Philosophy at Chicago's North Park University, decided to move to Champaign-Urbana to hone his more technical skills. Receiving his first system administration job in high school, Dan has over a decade of experience working with UNIX like, Microsoft, and Apple operating systems, several software languages, and various wired and wireless networked technologies.

Dan is currently a Software Engineer and the Senior Systems Administrator for OJC Technologies, where he has worked since 2006. He is a founding board member and Senior Network Engineer of the CUWiN Foundation (Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network), which is one of the world’s leading open-source ad-hoc mesh network research and development projects worldwide. Additionally, he is one of the original members of the Open Source Wireless Coalition, a global partnership of open source wireless integrators, researchers, implementers, and companies dedicated to the development of open source, interoperable, low-cost wireless technologies. He is also an active member of the Acorn Active Media Foundation, an employee-run tech collective whose members are themselves activists; the projects we work on are chosen based on members' interest in working on them.Dan also an active volunteer for the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (U-C IMC), a grassroots indymedia organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in the Champaign County area. He is also an active member of the Radio Free Urbana, WRFU-LP 104.5 FM, a low-power community radio station for the Urbana-Champaign area. Dan is also a leading tech member/volunteer of the Chambana.net project, a low-cost web hosting service for non-profit organizations, community groups, small business, and individuals both locally and internationally based in the Urbana-Champaign area. He is considered an expert on community wireless networks (CWN) and community technology.

He also enjoys log walks on the beach (the boneyard has sand?), salmon artichoke pizza (Jupiters pizza y0!), playing EVE till all hours of the morning (Go Generic Corp), breaking stuff and sometimes fixing it, representing the family (217mafia holla), events at the IMC that require ear plugs... generally any Maximum Strength Sound event (plugging the Rory), running/hiking/biking/fishing/camping/canoeing, photography, new things in U-C, heck... new things everywhere, generally hanging with those who call him a friend, and those he hasn't had a chance to know.
