What does your shop do and how do you work with Drupal?

CivicActions provides technology strategy consulting services and website development to progressive non profit, media and political organizations as well as social venture and triple bottom line businesses.  In the website development realm we currently work almost exclusively with Drupal. Over the last 4 years we have deployed Drupal websites for over 50 clients including Amnesty International, Witness, the Center For Reproductive Rights, Women’s Funding Network, The Great Turtle Race, ACLU, Jerry Brown, Jim Hightower and many more.  Currently we have over 40 members on our team working from 8 timezones around the globe.

How did you first get involved in Drupal development?

I personally discovered Drupal through DeanSpace and CivicSpace in 2003 and 2004.  CivicActions started working with Drupal in late 2004 and early 2005.  Since then our team has grown significantly in size as well as depth of Drupal knowledge. We are proud to have such wonderful people working with us and contributing to the Drupal project, we even have a community stipend program to subsidize individual efforts and activities.

What type of websites do you specialize in?

We work with clients, or on projects that are in alignment with our core values and vision for the world. Sometimes this has us building sites geared at disseminating information, other times sites that have social networking functionality. Recently we have been working on sites with internationalization as well as multi-media, most notably the Witness Video Hub for which we have developed the Media Mover suite of modules.

What are you most looking forward to at DrupalCon DC?

Always the people.  The best part of DrupalCon is meeting new people and catching up with colleagues in the industry, learning how others are tackling challenges and better serving clients. The sessions are also a big draw, of course, CivicActions team members are participating in eight different talks, and we’re very excited about that, but the mere opportunity to be in the same room with so many people who are constantly striving to improve what Drupal has to offer, and in many cases, to do it so that clients like ours can be more successful at what they do, well, that is just a wonderful opportunity.
